a fun twist on entertaining
The Tamale Girls began as a gathering of friends wanting to make tamales for the holidays two years ago. We’ve had so much fun that we decided to include our significant others and gather for dinner at each other’s homes several times a year. We are Cheryl Savage and Michael Sharp, Heidi and Nick Licata, Sue and Mike Yedlicka, Felicia Perez-Kausin and Ray Kausin, Cindy Quinlan and Tom Yedlicka, and Vickie and Steve Dixon. Continuing with the theme of multi-cultural foods, we’ve hosted Mexican, Italian, German, Southern Barbeque and Philippino dinners. The hostess chooses the theme and everyone brings a traditional side dish, while the hostess decorates and prepares the main course. Our group has found this to be a fun and unique way to be together- we try new recipes that might not have been otherwise attempted. This has been proven to be a great way to get out of our culinary comfort zone! Our most recent dinner had a Filipino theme; The dishes that were served included “ Lumpia” Filipino egg-rolls and “Sio-Pao” dumplings as appetizers; “Kalbi” Korean beef short ribs; “Pancit” a noodle, vegetable, chicken dish; “Chicken Adobo” served atop Filipino mainstay, sticky white rice. “Biko” a sweet rice dessert was served with Port for dessert. Our group got into the theme, dressing in island attire and played several Philippino games, which kept us laughing.
The next time you throw a dinner party, consider a cultural theme- who knows what will happen! Oh, and don’t forget to furnish a supply of take home containers!
